Spraying weeds: Gamba grass case study, and Glyphosate resistance

 

A few months ago I asked the NT Government if there was any information they would like to get across to landholders that we could cover in a video. They said that some people who sprayed gamba grass weren’t putting enough chemical onto the plant. So I made this video as a bit of a checklist for people who want to spray gamba.

One comment I had following the Douglas Daly Field Day was that we need a systems approach to managing weeds like gamba and grader and that round up resistance to gamba is a major threat that nobody is talking about.

Glyphosate resistance occurs where glyphosate is used intensively, few or no other herbicides are used and there is no control of survivors of glyphosate application. Some of the integrated weed management strategies recommended by Grains Research & Development Corporation include:

·         Read herbicide product labels and literature carefully and follow instructions (don't half-kill plants).

·         Do not introduce or spread weeds.

·         Use additional cultural weed control techniques to reduce seedbanks such as burning, cultivation, competitive crops and varieties, grazing and collection of weed seeds at harvest.
